Meet the Candidates 2022

Meet the Candidates 2022

The Wellfleet Community Forum conducted a virtual forum to “Meet the Candidates” on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 7:00 PM.  This program helped townspeople learn about candidates for positions on the ballots at the Annual and Special Town Elections.

The program was recorded and is available from the town’s website by clicking here.

This year three positions on the SelectBoard are open.  Current SelectBoard vice-chair  Michael DeVasto is running for reelection.  Janet Reinhart, whose term is up this year has decided not to seek re-election.  Helen Miranda Wilson, whose term is up in 2024, has resigned effective at the Annual Town Meeting and a two-year term will be on the ballot at the Special Town Election.

Michael DeVasto will be on the ballot at the Annual Town Election. Because Reinhart decided not to run late in the process, no candidate will be on the ballot for her position, and a write-in campaign is necessary to fill that position. Miranda Wilson’s position will be filled at the Special Town Election, and there will be sufficient time to file papers to be on the ballot for this position.

Two people have announced write-in candidacies for the three-year term and interest in the two-year position and will be invited to participate in this program.  The candidates we know of at this time are Michael DeVasto,  Barbara Carboni who is Truro’s Town Planner and Land Use Counsel, and Timothy Sayre. Barbara and Timothy have stated that they will both conduct a sticker campaign for the three-year term and take out nomination papers for the two-year term.

Other individuals who intend to conduct write-in campaigns or be on the ballot at the Special Town Election and wish to participate in this forum should contact Dick Elkin (dickelkin@gmail.com).

Candidates for the two-year term on the ballot at the Special Town Election can take out papers between April 13 and April 29 with the signed papers due before Tuesday, May 03, 2022.  Candidates must obtain at least 20 valid signatures from Wellfleet registered voters. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit at least 35 signatures for certification.

Candidates for other uncontested offices on the ballot will be invited to introduce themselves at the Forum meeting.

The Annual Town Election will be held on Monday, May 2, 2022. The Special Town Election will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022.   For both elections, polls will be open from Noon until 7:00 pm at the Wellfleet Adult Community Center ( COA) at 715 Old King’s Highway.

The Annual Town Meeting will be held on  Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 10:00 AM at the Ball Field across from Wellfleet Elementary School, 100 Lawrence Rd.
